Becaye Aw
Becaye Aw (* 1963 in Mauretanien) ist ein mauretanischer Gitarrist und Singer-Songwriter.
Leben
Aw entstammt der Volksgruppe der Fulbe. Er wuchs im senegalesischen Dakar auf und erlernte das Gitarrespielen weitgehend autodidaktisch. Er beherrscht außerdem traditionelle afrikanische Musikinstrumente wie die Zupflaute Xalam, die einsaitige Streichlaute Goge (riti) und die Stegharfe Kora. Seine musikalische Laufbahn begann er im Senegal, wo er u. a. mit Baaba Maal und Mansour Seck auftrat. Er studierte an der Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie (SGH, SGH Warsaw School of Economics) in Warschau, wo er mit Mamadou Diouf das Duo St. Africa gründete, bevor er Anfang der 1990er Jahre nach Oslo übersiedelte.
2004 debütierte er auf dem Album Kaké mit dem norwegischen Multiinstrumentalisten Steinar Ofsdal und dem Sänger und Perkussionisten Kouame Sereba. Seine erstes Soloalbum Sibi (mit Helge Andreas Norbakken) mit eigenen Kompositionen und traditionellen Songs erschien 2009, wurde in Norwegen als bestes Crossover-Album ausgezeichnet und war im Erscheinungsjahr in der Liste der World Music Charts Europe vertreten. Beim NAWA Festival 2025 trat er mit dem Inner Unity Ensemble (Valentina Bellanova, Ney, Shabnam Parvaresh, Klarinette, Uygur Vural, Cello, Amir Wahba, Perkussion, Mahan Mirarab, Gitarre) auf.
