Der Backflip ist ein Rückwärts-Salto, der zu den Grundlagen vieler Sportarten mit akrobatischem Hintergrund gehört, vor allem Freestyle-Sportarten wie Skateboarden, Extreme Martial Arts, Snowboarden, Motocross, BMX und Free Running. Um einen Backflip auszuführen, springt man in die Luft und dreht sich 360° um die horizontale Achse, um dann wieder auf den Füßen zu landen.

Bei einem Backflip mit einem Motocross-Motorrad oder einem BMX-Bike wird mit dem Gerät nach einem Sprung ein Rückwärtsüberschlag in der Luft durchgeführt.[1] Dabei gibt es verschiedene Backflip-Varianten bei denen der Fahrer zusätzlich akrobatische Einlagen während des Saltos durchführt.[2][3]

Das Gegenstück zum Backflip ist der als Frontflip bezeichnete Vorwärts-Salto.
