Restoran je preduzeće koja priprema iposlužuje gotovu hranu i piće kupcima.^[1] Obroci se uglavnom poslužuju i jedu u objektu, ali mnogi restorani također nude usluge uzimanja i dostave hrane. Restorani se uvelike razlikuju po izgledu i ponudi, uključujući širok izbor kuhinja i modela usluga u rasponu od jeftinih restorana brze hrane i kafeterija do porodičnih restorana srednje cijene, do luksuznih objekata visoke cijene.

Riječ restoran potiče iz ranog 19. vijeka, preuzeta iz francuske reči restaurer 'obezbjediti hranu', doslovno 'vratiti u nekadašnje stanje'^[2] i, budući da je sadašnji prilog glagola,^[3] izraz restoran može imati korišteno 1507. godine kao "restorativni napitak", au prepisci iz 1521. godine znači "ono što vraća snagu, ojačavajuća hrana ili lijek".^[4]
