Punga

U maorskoj mitologiji, Punga je morski bog. U havajskoj mitologiji postoji bog sličnog imena – Puna. Riječ ponga je maorsko ime biljke Cyathea dealbata.

Pungina porodica

Životinje čudnog oblika, kao ova raža, su Pungina djeca.

Punga je sin Tangaroe, boga mora, unuk Rangija i Pape. U drugom mitu je on sin Whaitiri, božice groma, i njenog supruga Kaitangate, smrtnog čovjeka. Po još nekim pričama Punga je sin Rangija i Pape, ili je brat bogova Karihi i Hemā. Pungina djeca su Ikatere (stvoritelj riba) i Tū-te-wehiwehi (stvoritelj reptila). Punga se povezuje sa svim odvratnim i ružnim životinjama, na kopnu i u moru. Gušteri, hobotnice, lignje, ribe se nazivaju "Pungini sljedbenici". Ljudi sa ružnom kožom se također smatraju Punginom djecom.
