Merle Eleanor Gold (rođena Tuberg) (7. mart 1921. - 29. septembar 2017.) bila je američka astrofizičarka, najpoznatija po proučavanju Sunca sa nobelovcem Subrahmanyan Chandrasekharom.[1]

Rani život i obrazovanje

Rođena je 7. marta 1921. i odrasla je u Rochesteru u Minnesoti u porodici Nathaniela i Eleanor Tuberg.[2] Završila je srednju školu 1939. kao valediktorica svoje klase.[2] Obučavala se za medicinskog sekretara na klinici Mayo dvije godine prije nego što je diplomirala na Univerzitetu u Chicagu.[2] Nakon diplomiranja, završila je doktorat iz astrofizike kod Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhara na Opservatoriji Yerkes.[1][2][3][4][5] Njena teza je bila o tome kako apsorpcione linije otkrivene sa Sunca variraju preko solarnog diska.[3]

Istraživanje i karijera

Godine 1946. dobila je postdoktorsku stipendiju na Univerzitetu u Cambridgeu.[1][2] Objavila je jedan istraživački rad nakon svoje teze o životnom vijeku klastera maglina izvan Mliječnog puta.[1][6] Godine 1971. postala je urednica na Poljoprivrednoj školi Cornell gdje je radila do penzionisanja.[2]

Privatni život

Udala se za astronoma Thomasa Golda 1947. i imali su troje djece prije nego što su se razveli 1971.[1][2] Umrla je u Ithaca, New York 29. septembra 2017.[2]
