Interferon α (IFNα) koristio se za liječenje različitih tipovba raka, uključujući rak dojke, ali je njegova antitumorska aktivnost relativno niska, što značajno ometa njegovu kliničku primjenu. U ovoj studiji primijenjen je sistem za skrining biblioteke peptida Ph.D.-12 za identifikaciju kratkog peptida koji se specifično veže za ćelije raka dojke MCF-7. Spajanjem MCF-7 vezujućeg peptida (MBP) sa C-terminalom IFNα, konstruirana inženjeriranu fuzijska molekula IFNα-MBP (IMBP) i ovaj novi fuzijski protein primijenjen je u liječenju raka dojke. Otkriveno je da je IMBP pokazao značajno veću aktivnost od divljeg tipa IFNα u inhibiranju rasta ćelijaa i induciranju ćelijskee apoptoze. Osim toga, IMBP je pojačao terapijsku učinkovitost hemoterapijeraka dojke na bazi doksorubicina, aktivacijom gena za zaustavljanje ćelijskog ciklusa i ćelijskih apoptoza, uključujući p53, p21, CDK2, ciklin A, kaspazu 9, Bcl-2 i Bax. Pojačana aktivnost sintetskog IMBP-a također je povezana s aktivacijom pretvarača signala i aktivacijom ciljnih gena transkripcije 1 (STAT1) na putu (STAT1, IFIT1, IFITM1 i MX1).
