General

General je oficirski čin visokog vojnog ranga. Ovaj termin se koristi gotovo u svakoj zemlji svijeta.

U mnogim zemljama postoje različiti stupnjevi generalskog čina (naprimjer u Armiji RBiH je postojao brigadni general, armijski general itd.), što predstavlja najviše oficirske činove jedne vojske. Ipak u nekim zemljama postoje i oficirski činovi višeg ranga od generala, kao npr. maršal.

General je historijski gledano armijski čin, ali se često koristi i u vazdušnim snagama. U većini mornarica svijeta, ekvivalent činu generala je čin admirala.

Upotreba čina generala je započela u 17. vijeku u vrijeme organizovanja profesionalnih armija. U početku se general koristio kao sufiks postojećim činovima, naprimjer pukovnik general, kapetan general, u cilju razlikovanja najznačajnijih vojnih oficira jedne vojske.
