Friz na tornju vjetrova u Atini

Friz je arhitektonski izraz za široki centralni dio glavnog vijenca na klasičnim kompozicijama stubova te može biti običnog oblika ili jonskog ili korintskog reda. U kompoziciji sjedi na arhitravi (glavnoj gredi) i dovršen je na vrhu sa profilacijom vijenca.

Po svom sadržaju može imati ornamentalne ukrase ili može sadržavati scene s figuralniom prikazima. U antičko vrijeme postoje ovi ukras: 1. valovita traka, 2. meandar, 3. zupčasti friz; u romanici, 4. nazubljeni friz (testerasti friz), 5. friz šahovsko polje (kockasti friz), 6. rezbareni (reckasti friz), 7. arkadni friz (friz polukružnih lukova), 8. friz ukrštenih lukova, 9. dijamantni friz (njemačka traka, cik-cak friz). U gotici: listasti i lisnati frizovi.
