Edo
Edo ( japanski: 江戸 ), također romanizovan kao Jedo, Yedo ili Yeddo, nekadašnji je naziv Tokija.[1]

Edo je ime nekad nevažnog ribarskog grada (luke), koji je 1603. pod šogunom Tokugave Iejasu (1543-1616) proglašen glavnim gradom šogunata. Službeni glavni grad i careva rezidencija (praktički tada bez vlade) je bio i dalje Kyoto. Zato je doba u kojem su vladali šoguni Tokugawa dobilo ime Edo-period (1603-1867).
Car Mutsuhito (Meiji-period) odredio je Edo kao službeni glavni grad i preimenovao ga 1868. u Tokyo (prevedeno istočni glavni grad).
Edo, nekadašnji jōkamachi (grad zamak) sa središtem u dvorcu Edo koji se nalazi u provinciji Musaši, postao je de facto glavni grad Japana od 1603. godine kao sjedište Tokugawa šogunata . Edo je izrastao u jedan od najvećih gradova na svijetu pod Tokugawom.
