Devi

Devī (sanskrt: देवी) je sanskrtska riječ koja znači "božica" te se koristi u hinduizmu kao oznaka ženskih božanstava. Muški oblik riječi je deva. Obje riječi označavaju nešto "nebesko/božansko". Riječ devi je povezana s grčkom riječju thea i latinskom dea.

Kroz historiju hinduizma, božice su bile vrlo popularne te se popularnost i štovanje božica nisu smanjili ni danas. U Indiji, državi u kojoj mnoge žene nailaze na probleme specifične za tu državu, kultovi božica, djelomično zbog feminizma, ponovo oživljuju u velikom broju. Neke tradicije opisuju žensku energiju kao esenciju svemira − Šakti. Najpoznatiji tekstovi koji slave Šakti su himne Devīsūkta i Lalita Sahasranama. Sekta šaktizam poštuje Šakti kao vrhovno biće[1] te su Šakti posvećeni mnogi hramovi.
