Carl Neumann

 

Carl Gottfried Neumann (7. maj 1832. - 27. mart 1925. godine) je bio njemački matematičar.

Neumann je rođen u Königsbergu, Pruska, kao sin mineralogičara, fizičara i matematičara Franza Ernsta Neumanna (1798.-1895.), koji je bio profesor mineralogije i fizike na Univerzitetu u Königsbergu. Carl Neumann je studirao u Königsberg i Halleu, a bio je profesor na univerzitetima u Halleu, Baselu, Tübingenu i Leipzigu.

Neumann je radio na Dirichletovom principu, te se može smatrati za jednog od začetnika teorije integralnih jednačina. Neumannov red, koji je analogan geometrijskom redu

,

ali za beskonačne matrice, dobio je naziv po njemu.

Zajedno sa Alfredom Clebschom Neumann je osnovao matematički istraživački časopis Mathematische Annalen. Umro je u Leipzigu.

Neumannov granični uslov za određene vrste običnih i parcijalnih diferencijalnih jednačina dobio je naziv po njemu.
