Barit je mineral čiji je hemijski sastav barij-sulfat (BaSO4). Ime mu je izvedeno iz grčke riječi βαρύς (težak). Jedan od trivijalnih naziva za njega je težac. Kristalizira u ortorompskom kristalnom sistemu. Služi kao osnovna ruda barija i u proizvodnji boja i papira. Iako sadrži metal barij, ne smatra se toksičnim, zbog izuzetno slabe rastvorljivosti u vodi.
