  • 6. januar – Španski kapetan Hernando de Santana osniva grad Valledupar, u današnjoj Kolumbiji.[1] 7. februar – Nakon 10-sedmične konklave u Rimu za izbor novog pape, Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte, biskup Palestrine, izabran je na 61. glasanju nakon što je Reginald Pole iz Engleske izgubio dva glasa. Ciocchi del Monte uzima ime Papa Julije III i krunisan je sljedećeg dana, naslijedivši pokojnog papu Pavla III.[2]
