Вяшчанне тэлеканала пачалося ў ЗША 1 жніўня 1981 года. У цяперашні час брэнд MTV па ліцэнзіі выкарыстоўваюць мноства тэлекампаніяў у розных краінах свету. У Расіі MTV («MTV Расія») пачаў сваё вяшчанне 26 верасня 1998 года.

Ва Украіне MTV («MTV Украіна») распачаў сваю працу 25 жніўня 2007 года.
