Poltawa (ukrainisch, russisch Полтава, polnisch Połtawa, englisch Poltava) isch e Stadt in de Zentralukraine am Fluss Worskla. Si isch s Zentrum vo de gliichnamigen Oblast un Verwaltigssitz vom Rajon Poltawa. D Stadt ligt ugfähr 350 km südöschtlich vo de ukrainische Hauptstadt Kiew.
Poltawa het über 300.000 Iiwohner.

Jh. isch von ere Stadt Baltawar am Worskla d Red und in em Dokument vom Kiewer Rus us em Jahr 1174 wird e Stadt Ltava erwähnt, beides bezieht sich vermutlich uf Poltawa, genauso wie de Name Oltava, wo in andre Quelle vorchunnt. S isch net sicher, ob de Ort au während der Mongolezit (13. - 14. Jh.) durchgängig bsiidlet isch gsi. De hütige Name Poltawa taucht zum erschte mal 1430 in eme Dokument vom litauische Fürstetum uf. 1641 het Poltawa durch de polnisch-litauische Staat d Stadtrechte verliehe übecho. Damals het d Stadt 812 Iiwohner gha un es het 11 Mühlräder gäh.
