Es isch en Infanteriieiheit gsi und het in Rom dient, het aber au in verschiidnige Schlachte mitkämpft, so zum Bischbil in dr Verdeidigung vo Rom gege Piedmont. Im Zweite Wältchrieg, nochdäm Italie e separate Waffestillstand mit de Allierte abgschlose het und die Dütsche im Septämber 1943 Rom bsetzt hai, het d Palatingarde d Vatikanstadt vor italiänische Faschiste beschützt. Noch em Zweite Vatikanische Konzil isch si zsämme mit dr Nobelgarde ufglöst worde.

D Bewaffnig vo dr Garde het us Gwehr und Bistole bestande. Im Gegesatz zur Nobel- und Gendarmeriigarde isch si nie beritte gsi. Maximal 500 Bürger[1] us dr Stadt Rom hai in ere as Freiwilligi dient. Si isch noch em Palatin-Hügel z Rom benennt worde.
