Spesies payung adalah spesies yang dipilih untuk menentukan putusan-putusan terkait konservasi, umumnya karena perlindungan spesies-spesies ini secara tidak langsung berarti melindungi banyak spesies lainnya yang membentuk komunitas ekologis habitatnya (dikenal sebagai efek payung). Konservasi spesies dapat bersifat subjektif karena sulit untuk menentukan status banyak spesies. Spesies payung umumnya adalah spesies unggulan yang konservasinya menguntungkan spesies lainnya,[1]: 280  atau merupakan spesies kunci yang barangkali dijadikan subjek konservasi karena dampaknya pada suatu ekosistem. Spesies payung dapat digunakan untuk menentukan tempat kemungkinan suaka di masa depan, mengetahui ukuran minimum suatu wilayah konservasi, dan menentukan komposisi, struktur dan proses-proses pada suatu ekosistem.[2]
