Mahikeng

Lokasi Mafikeng di Provinsi North West

Mahikeng, juga dikenal sebagai Mafikeng; hingga 1980 disebut Mafeking, ialah ibu kota Provinsi North West, Afrika Selatan, dan berpenduduk sekitar 50.000 jiwa. Kota ini terletak di ketinggian 1500 meter, di bantaran Sungai Molopo yang membentuk perbatasan selatan Botswana. Mahikeng didirikan pada tahun 1880-an sebagai tempat tentara bayaran Inggris.

Mahikeng ialah ibu kota proktektorat Bechuanaland antara tahun 1894-1965 meskipun terletak di luar batas protektorat itu.

Kota ini terkenal akan Pengepungan Mafikeng pada masa Perang Boer II, di mana Britania mengepung kota ini selama 217 hari, dari bulan Oktober 1899 hingga Mei 1900 – pertempuran yang mengantarkan Robert Baden-Powell sebagai pahlawan nasional.
