Affluenza

Affluenza, sebuah portmanteau dari kata affluence dan influenza, adalah sebuah istilah yang dipakai oleh para kritikus konsumerisme. Kata tersebut mula-mula dipakai pada tahun 1954[1] tetapi meraih sendi-sendi konsepnya dalam sebuah dokumenter PBS tahun 1997 bernama sama[2] dan buku pada masa berikutnya, Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic (2001, direvisi pada tahun 2005, 2014). Karya-karya tersebut mengartikan affluenza sebagai "sebuah penularan keadaan perubahan sosial dari pemborosan, utang, anksietas, dan pembuang-buangan yang diakibatkan dari pemakaian berlebihan".[3] Istilah "affluenza" juga dipakai untuk merujuk kepada ketidakmampuan pengertian dampak suatu tindakan karena hak keuangan, terutama dalam kasus Ethan Couch.[4]
