Historio
Piet Retief estis fondita en 1883 kaj oni nomis la urbeton pri bura gvidanto Piet Retief. En 1886 oni donis al la urbeto novan loknomon Klein Vrystaat (=Malgranda Liberŝtato). En 1891 la urbo estis integrigita al Sudafriko (brita). La urbo iĝis municipo en 1932. En 2010 kampanjo komenciĝis por nomi la grandurbon eMkhondo.
