History

This lodge was named for the Honorable William Thomas Wallace, Honorary Past Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland and its Jurisdictions. Having started out as a study club on Ft. Meade, Maryland in 1972, it received its charter from M.W. Samuel T. Daniels, Grand Master, on July 10th 1978.

Those first charter members were Brothers: J. Mark Magee, Thornton Blizzard, James Branch, Rueben Buck, James Cooper Jr. , Eugene Daughertly Jr. , Moses Hollins, Preston Jenkins Jr. , John Lyles, Arthur Mallory, Steven Meredith, Tommie Miller, James Nathan, Samuel Nickens, Austin Quenton, Lucky Williams, Archie Woods, and Alvin Vardiman. We thank those brothers for their tenacity, sincerity and foresight.

In 1979 the study club was renamed the "Sammie L. Taylor Sr.", after the first Worshipful Master of the Lodge in this honor. The lodge received immediate recognition at the 131st Grand Lodge Communications, their first, when its Officers were given the honor of opening the Session, and received the "Lodge of the Year" award. There were Thirty-Six (36) new members initiated that first year.

On The Move...... After several years the lodge moved from Ft. Meade, due to military restrictions, to the VFW Post building located on Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie. The lodge remained there a little over a year before moving on to the House of God Church in Severn. After several months, WM Ozzie Harris located an old wodden schoolhouse, which had not been in use for several years. It was known as the "Severn Colored Elementary School" on Queenstown Road, and had been rented to the Severn Improvement Association for their use for $1.00 annually by the county.

With the help of the members, and what little funds they had placed in a lodge building fund, WM Harris was able to renovate the building and make it useable, not only for the lodge and it's Eastern Star Chapter "Amulet Chapter No. 85" , but for the Association also. After several years the Association had been able to work with the State Historical Society and declare the building a historical site, and the developed plans for the building which did not include the lodge and it's affiliated bodies, so they were forced to move to another location. The Association developed the building into a childcare center.

The lodge was able to open discussion with Universal Lodge No. 14 in Annapolis, to utilize there building on a "temporary" basis and was successful. After two and a half years there came an opportunity to return to Ft. Meade and the members voted to do so in 1998. They were allowed to meet in the old "4 Winds NCO Club", which had been transferred into a training center, until the Girl & Boy Scouts on post lost their building and were moved into the 4 Winds Club. The lodge and its affiliated bodies were then moved to the 8th Street Chapel, which had been converted into a training center also.

Just when things were looking up, because the DPCA on post had planned on moving all privately authorized entities to a newly renovated community building, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon changed all of that. Because of the extremely security consciousness of all military locations, and the mixture of active duty and retired military with civilians which now composed our lodge, the lodge had to move back to Universal Lodge No. 14, temporarily, and then on to Rising Sun Lodge No. 46 were we currently meet.
