Translation standard of non-Chinese names into a Chinese name based on traditional Chinese name giving rules

Dr. Shaoying Wang

1. Introduction

The Chinese writing does not have phonetic letters, but ideological symbols; i.e. they use the graphic picture to indicat their internal and conceptual units. Chinese name has family name and first name, which occupy reverse places, not like european name. Family name is particularly in front of name, first name against it stands after family name. Same as in European name, most Chinese hold its family name. The first name is given by parents or grandparents and consists of one or two Chinese symbols,

The name giving in China has a history of three thousand years. Through different method, theory and origin, like SIZHU, WUHANG and BAGUA, the name giving in China is led by guidelines, in order to obtain defined purpose. At first, the given name, which consist of one or two symbols, have to indicates a clear sonance with characteristics and possess nevertheless still the balance with the YinYan values and Believes. Finally the name must contain a significatient meaning, which represents the desires of parents or the entire family. The characteristics of gived name, which contain the balance with the YinYan value and also meaning of the ideological Chinese symbols. The Namegaving in China has been an important part of Chinese culture for a long time.

This substantial characteristics are also the key to the determination of the name as man or a woman. The symbols, which are used in a male name, can be classified in one of the following categories:
A. Energy, power, mountain and metals, which represent a personality of strenghth.
B. Moral, light, filialness, which get their ancestor honour.
C. Luck, harmony, wealth, fame, which lead to a lucky life.
D. Intelligence, intellect, enlightment and independence, which have a meaning of the potential, to change the world.

In comparions with a name of a man, female names contain the symbols of the following categories:
A. Beautifulnesses and colored<br. /> B. Flowers and jewel.
C. Preference/advantage and tender feelings, which endeavor itself to be greaceful and charismatic.
Beside the representation of the desires of parents, some symboles selected can be controlled and determined according to SIZHU, WUHANG and BAGUA. Finally a new name is manufactured. The person on the journey in his life will encouraged and inspired by their given names . Also the use of this Regels has been is spread and expanded to the Namegiving of the company.

Confucius, the most important Chinese philosopher, gave a name in advance of his hundred subsequent generations 2500 years ago. For example, the name of 77sten living generation is Kong Decheng 孔德成 (孔: Kong, families name; 德: morality; 成: to be or become), who is the president of Kong-family-tree. Totally his name means: become moral, highly standing and respectable humans-------a desire of the Confucius of over 2500 years. The Chinese president has name Hu Jin Tao, in Chinese 胡锦涛 (whereby 胡: Family name, 锦: magnificently and shining wealth, and 涛: large wave). Thus, his name means in Chinese: a magnificent wealth like high wave.

The fast growth of the international economy follows the increase of the supply of the non-Chinese people to China, which are ready to let their names translate into Chinese or translate to let to have. However many non-Chinese people, which would not like to drive yet to China, have always increasing interest to understand Chinese culture and Chinese name to have. Some of it, which know Chinese culture of the name Giving, have, like Chinese, also trationellen Chinese name with beautiful meaning. The professor for Sinology Robin at the University of Freikfurt has popularen Chinese name 如宾. The name does not only have a beautiful sound, separates a contentwise meaning---very friendly. The German Ambassador in China Dr. Michael Friedrich Wilhelm does not shepherd-have 施明贤 has in the übersetzeten name, but new abgegenen Chinese name and means: noble and honest virtueful man

More and more people have a tremendous interesting to know their chinese name. For 5 years I have translated the non-Chinese names of over ten thousend people into Chinese, both by internet and personally service. In this time, many people showed me their in Chinese translated name, either as if tattoo symbols or as artistic pictures. Also the Chinese names of politicians, sportsmen, and artists can be often seen in the Chinese media. Unfortunately, the names translated into Chinese have neither a suitable selection of the Chinese symbols nor total singnificant meaning at all. The use of traditional chinese name giving guidline, such as SIZHU, WUHANG and BAGUA can not eventuelly found.

The following table shows some examples, amount which the difference in the selection of the symbols of the Chinese name giving and in the case of the translation of the non-Chinese name becomes very clear. the similarity verbal of most translated names have been took into consideration. But the names translated into Chinese use only the symbols, which are not used for Chinese by the name giving.

please see the examples by www.name-link-love.de/englishversion.htm

It could be that the symbols used for non-Chinese names are selected, which would not be used by Chinese in their names, so that the names translated into Chinese are easily recognizable thereby for the non-Chinese names.

It is still found out that in the translation of the non-Chinese names used symbols do not content any sense. Assumes that, the completely translated names do not likewisely possess desirable total meaning. The feeling of the love, which parents for their children preserve and are concentrated in Chinese names, will be looked for in vain in the translated names. Also it is often to be seen that one non-Chinese name is translated in different Chinese names with unidentischen discussions by different media, Büche, newspaper and TV. Generally to say, The translation of non-Chinese name doest not follow the traditional rules of the Chinese naming in connection with well-being sound, feeling of the love and wishes for whole life.

The reasons, which cause the heterogeneities mentioned above, differences and anarchy between the Chinese names and the names translated into Chinese, are that a rule of the translation of the non-Chinese names is missing. The author gained five year experience during his Translating practise of the non-Chinese names, deflected numerous literatures concerned with seventh all symbols, which use for chinese namegiving. The first standard of translation for non-Chinese names has been set up.

<< Standard of translating non Chinese of names into A Chinese name >> based on the syllables and tones of the English and German name (as examples) follows the traditional rule of the Chinese namegiving and contains all symbols, which possess significant meanings, and are often used for the Chinese namegiving. Thus the translated name sounds directly as original name and has also a beautiful meaning. For the concrect individual people, whose translated name would further like to contain the purpose of SIZHU, WUHANG and BAGUA , must meet professional person.
