Cheryl Chase Edits #1

She told Salon that she developed ovotestis at age 8[3] (later clarified as "the testicular part of her ovo-testes").[8] She found out about the clitoridectomy aged 10, and at age 21 succeeded in gaining access to her medical records[4] (some sources say this occurred in her early thirties[9])

  • (“She found out about the clitoridectomy aged 10,” needs to be “at age 10”)

While in Japan, she also did translation work. "I was good at all the hard stuff, the non-emotional stuff that’s considered more masculine."[9] Upon return to the United States, Chase began working as an intersex activist. In 2008, Chase received a M.A. in organization development from Sonoma State University.

  • Quotes can’t stand alone, needs to be introduced in some way.
  • Suggested way: While in Japan, she also did translation work, “I was good at all the hard stuff, the non-emotional stuff that's considered more masculine,” she stated. Or “stated Chase.”

In 1993, via a letter to the editor published in The Sciences July/August issue, she founded the now-defunct Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) by fiat and asked for people to write to her under her new name, Cheryl Chase, the beginning of the movement to protect the human rights of people born with intersex conditions in the U.S.[13]

  • ( No need for dash between now and defunct)

In the 1990s, she began using the names Bo Laurent and Cheryl Chase simultaneously, sometimes in the same publication.[14]

  • ( No need for the comma after “In the 1990s” however I think it would technically work. Just a suggestion)

(NEW SECTION: Recent Advocacy Work)

Chase moved away from ISNA in the early 2000’s to become a board member of the Advisory Committee of Accord Aliance.

Accord Alliance, established in 2008, is a non-profit organization with a goal of promoting “comprehensive and integrated approaches to care that enhance the health and well-being of people and families affected by differences of sex development (DSD),” as stated on the organizations official website.

interACT Edits #1

interACT uses innovative strategies to advocate for the legal and human rights of children born with intersex traits, including media work and the development of youth leadership, in addition to strategic litigation.

  • Possibly consider adding an apostrophe rather than a comma in “..children born with intersex traits; including media work and….”

Issues of focus are informed consent, insurance, identity documents, school accommodation, discrimination, medical records retrieval, adoption, military service, medical privacy, refugee asylum, and wider international human rights.[9][10][11]

  • (Consider adding more sources for the topics above. Three sources are given, but they only cover 3/10 topics mentioned.)
  • Suggested sources to add:

InterACT Edits #2

(ADD UNDER NEW SECTION SPECIFICALLY FOR THE SB OR INCLUDE IN ADVOCACY SECTION)

InterACT has been an advocate for a variety of legisative movements related to intersexuality and those affected. One example of their advocacy is the organizations support and co-sponsorship of the proposed legislation of California Senate Bill 201.

Proposed by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) on January 28, 2019 and amended on March 25, 2019, the proposal has yet to be voted on. The Senate Bill would “ensure intersex individuals can provide informed consent before any medical treatments or interventions that could irreversibly affect their fertility or sexual function,” as stated on the interACT website. The bill would not prohibit intervention in the instance of a medical emergency.

InterACT commented on the legislation, stating that “This long overdue measure will give individuals the opportunity to delay medically unnecessary, potentially harmful, irreparable procedures until they have the ability to make an informed decision for themselves.”
