Terry C Byam, Educator, Teacher, Principal, Administrator

Terry C Byam was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. After migrating to the United States in 1979, Terry started his career in education in 1988 where he worked as an English teacher at the high school where he graduated, Prospect Heights High School in Brooklyn, New York. He later transferred to a small alternative high school called Street Academy High School where he had an opportunity to work with some amazing young people. Terry was quickly promoted to the role of a school administrator while fine tuning his craft as a teacher. In 1998, he became the assistant principal at Street Academy. In this role, he was able to expand his influence, working with teachers to strengthen teaching and learning beyond his own classroom. Leveraging his passion for teaching and his love for children, he left Street Academy to become the founding principal of a small high school in Bushwick, Brooklyn. In 2003, the Bushwick School for Social Justice (BSSJ) open its doors to 135 students. Under his leadership,the BSSJ catapulted into the best academic option for high school students in the Bushwick community. The school consistently earned an "A" on the NYC School Progress Reports. Graduation rates soared under his leadership. In 2009, with a sad heart he said goodbye to BSSJ to take the role of network leader. He and his network team supported 30 schools in teaching and learning, student services and operations. In 2013, he transitioned into the role of Executive Director of School Governance, where he has expanded his role citywide, working to support more 500 co-located campuses in New York City. In this role, he works with building councils providing them with strategies and best practices to enhance communication, collaboration and space sharing. Terry C Byam is a proud resident of Brooklyn, New York where he lives with his wife and two daughters.
