The Jonathans are a garage rock band that surfaced and formed in mid-2009 consisting of Ari Dee, Surya Dee, Mick Kamarga and Robin McCready.
Biography
The band started when lead singer Ari Dee got back from a music festival and was inspired by the bands that he saw so he decided to write a song - later known as "Needle". Ari was not happy with it being just acoustic. Getting together with his brother Surya and friend Mick, the three discussed how to make the song work. They decided that since Mick knew a little about drumming, he would then become the drummer of the band. Surya, having never played anything but a couple chords on acoustic guitar, came up with the bass line for the song and taught himself the spots on the bass, which then became his preferred instrument. With this line up they managed to get a better feeling for the music. The band name came about after a close cousin was lost to heroin. The band then met their lead guitarist Robin McCready. The band began rehearsing a nine song set which included "Needle", "Loose Change" and "Old Man" from their 2009 EP.
The band's first gig came about after a friend who worked with Ari and Surya heard their music and encouraged them to start gigging. He was living in an antiques warehouse at the time, and let the band organize their first gig there. Since then The Jonathans have played gigs around Melbourne.
Influences
With sound that was evoked from their parents’ sing alongs and listening to their old records, the band's sound is said to have been influenced by bands such as Neil Young, Leo Kottke, Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, The Plimsouls and The Ramones. References has also been made about the band's live shows as being sheepish and captivating, all in one delivery.
