o had pre-ordered it, resulting in the album leaking. The album was described by the band as edgier, and as having a "slightly rockier tone" than their previous efforts.[1]

One Direction began working on their third studio album whilst embarking on their second international tour, the Take Me Home Tour. The album was announced simultaneously with the news of the band's third world tour, the Where We Are Tour, which subsequently led fans to wrongly assume that the album title to be Where We Are.[2] Member Louis Tomlinson proclaimed that the album would have a more "rockier" sound to it than the band's previous releases.[1] The official title of the album was announced on September 6, 2013, starting with Zayn Malik tweeting a teaser video of Harry Styles spelling out the word "Mid" out of a pile of alphabet cards on the floor, followed by a full video posted on the band's Instagram account later on, revealing the title, Midnight Memories.[3][4]

The album's track list was supposedly leaked on July 2, 2013, revealing a vocal collaboration with frequent collaborator Ed Sheeran, who previously wrote "Little Things" and "Moments", for the song "All I Have for You". However, it was later confirmed by the band that they had not done any collaboration with Sheeran. Aside from the premiere of "Best Song Ever", two other songs rumoured to appear on the album, "Can't Let Her Go" and "Diana", both co-written by the band, were leaked online within days. Although "Diana" appeared on the final track list, "Can't Let Her Go" did not. Other tracks recorded for the album which did not make the final cut, according to ASCAP, include "Blame it All on You" and "Whatever She Wants".[5]

The album artwork was released early exclusively by The Sun via a tweet which was later confirmed to be the official artwork through the band's official Twitter account, though the early access was only available for those who held a membership of the newspaper's online version.[6][7] On October 11, the band presented the album's final track list through the "#MidnightMemoriesTrackQuiz" hashtag on Twitter by giving out a mixture of hints and blank spaces to be filled alongside the final result. The full track list for the deluxe edition was shown on iTunes.[8][9]

Aside from that, Indonesia agreed to hasten a sub-regional meeting of five ASEAN countries on the transboundary haze from August to July 17 after a meeting between Environment Minister, Balthasar Kambuaya and his Malaysian counterpart, G. Palanivel.[10]

Malaysians breathe easier when the overnight rain in numerous parts of the west coast helped to clear the skies. There was a significant drop in the API values in most areas, including Port Klang since 26 June.[11]

The crisis is believed to have claimed its first life, a diabetic woman from Muar who was suffering from asthma. Another casualty was an elderly man, also from the same town. Both deaths were reported early in the week.[12]

On the same day, a diabetic, Li Cai Ling was found unconscious following an asthma attack. She died the next morning, signifying the first possible death attributed to the crisis. A medical report said Li had a stroke due to complications arising from a lung infection and pulmonary edema as a result of inhaling polluted air. However, further investigations will be conducted to ascertain if the haze had indeed triggered the asthma attack.[13]

Measures taken

The Premier League newcomers, Cardiff City F.C. have also postponed their six-day promotional tour of Malaysia in the week because of the air pollution crisis.[14] Concurrently, all orders to shut schools in the nation were withdrawn by 27 June, though outdoor activities are to remain cancelled in some schools.[15]

Subsequently, both organisers of the Olympic Day Run, McDonald's Malaysia and Olympic Council of Malaysia have agreed to postpone the 10th annual Run scheduled for 23 June amid health fears. It was announced on their official website and Facebook page.[16][17] Also, on 24 June, Pizza Hut Malaysia has temporarily halted their delivery services for their Muar and Port Klang branches to ensure the riders' safety due to the worsening haze. Nonetheless, they have resumed the delivery services in Muar a day later.[18][19]

On top of that, the Department of Environment (DOE) began updating the API readings on an hourly basis. They were made available for public's access on both the Department's official website and portal.[20]
