The Lovell Quinta Arboretum is a 28-acre site in Swettenham, owned by charity Tatton Garden Society.

History

Sir Bernard Lovell bought the site of the current Arboretum, along with his house, in 1948. A keen horticulturalist, he developed his land over the next few years, gradually acquiring more land to develop the site. His aim was to collect one example of every tree and shrub listed in the then five volumes of W J Bean’s seminal reference work Trees and Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles that would grow and flourish in Cheshire.

During the development he excavated a lake which was lined with ‘puddled clay’ to form a significant landscape feature. Part of the design included avenues and groves to enhance the layout. As the Arboretum was established plants were presented, donated and sourced from a wide range of places, a number being used as features to mark major events in the life of Sir Bernard and Joyce Lovell. He was meticulous in keeping records including hand drawn plans and a card index for each plant.

In 1996, Sir Bernard sold the freehold of the site, which then covered 40 acres, to local charity The Cheshire Wildlife Trust (CWT). Although the CWT had taken over the site, their focus was on maintaining the habitat for wildlife and not on the maintenance and preservation of the many rare specimen trees accumulated during a lifetime of travel. At the time, he was president of the Tatton Garden Society (TGS) which had recently lost their base at the walled garden at Tatton Park. In 2003, the CWT agreed to sell the freehold of the site to the TGS, retaining around 12 acres of woodland as a nature reserve.
