Ranjan Kumar Agarwal is an associate at Bennett Jones LLP in Toronto. He was previously a lawyer at Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP, Canada's largest management-side labour and employment boutique law firm. Ranjan is a litigator, with a specific interest in commercial litigation, employment law, public law (including administrative law, labour law and human rights law) and international law.
Ranjan graduated from the Joint LL.B./M.A. (International Affairs) program at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) in 2003. He is also a graduate of the University of Alberta's Department of Political Science (B.A. with First Class Honours in 1999).
Ranjan has published articles on human rights issues, including The Barefoot Lawyer: Prosecuting Child Labour at the Supreme Court of India, 21 Ariz. J. Int'l & Comp. L. 663 (2004). Ranjan received Carleton University's Pierre Laberge Research Essay Prize for an earlier version of this article.
Ranjan is a well-known inter-varsity debator. He is a former Canadian national debating champion (2000) and winner of the Cambridge University debating tournament (2002). In 2002, Ranjan was sixth place speaker at the World University Debating Championships, one of the best international individual results of a Canadian debator at the time. He is also previous winner of the Western Canadian debating championship (the McGoun Cup) and top speaker at the North American debating championships. He acted as Deputy Chief Adjudicator at the 2005 World University Debating Championships in Singapore and Chief Adjudicator at the 2002 Canadian national debating championships. Ranjan is past president of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID) and the University of Ottawa's English Debating Society. Ranjan started debating in high school, where he was winner of the Alberta provincial debating championship and a top speaker at the national debating seminar.
