1) How you searched for a source (search strategy – where you went to find it):

Because I was seeking reference material regarding addictions and withdrawal in the context of

caffeine dependence and knowing that both the DSM-V and the ICD-11 provide information on

addictions (including caffeine) I accessed the PsychiatryOnline database through the Queen’s

Library which led me to the online version of the DSM-V. I searched the World Health

Organization website for ICD-11 and found https://www.who.int/classifications/icd/en/ . I also did

a PubMed search using “Caffeine” and “Withdrawal” as search terms, limiting the publications to

Books and Documents and published within 5 years.

2) What potential sources were identified and considered (give examples of 1 or 2):

3) Why the source was chosen (what made it better than other choices):

I chose the DSM-V because it is the basis upon which diagnoses regarding addictions can be

made in North America and so it is uniquely suited to provide accurate information regarding

withdrawal from caffeine use in the context of dependence.

4) List at least three reasons why the source that was selected meets Wikipedia’s reliable

medical sources (MEDRS) criteria:

The DSM-V meets Wikipedia’s MEDRS criteria in the following ways:

ii) DSM-V is not a primary source of information; it is a tertiary source of information used

to diagnose psychiatric illnesses.

ii) DSM-V is not based on opinion, it is an accumulation of various scientific

resources.This reduces the likelihood of bias.

iii) The DSM-V is a publication from the American Psychiatric Association, which is a

medical organization. The information within the DSM-V provides recommendations/guidelines

for treatment of various psychiatric disorders.

5) How do you plan to use the source for improving the article?

I plan on updating the information on withdrawal’s effects on daily functioning as well as looking

further into the statistics listed and seeing if there are any more recent data presented in my

source as my section has been cited using a primary source. Specifically I intend to edit the

following two sentences: “ Withdrawal can cause mild to clinically significant distress or

impairment in daily functioning. The frequency at which this occurs is self-reported at 11%, but

in lab tests only half of the people who report withdrawal actually experience it, casting doubt on

many claims of dependence.”

Proposed Changes

Change this: "Caffeine dependence can involve withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue, headache, irritability, depressed mood, reduced contentedness, inability to concentrate, sleepiness or drowsiness, stomach pain, and joint pain."

To this: "The diagnostic criteria for caffeine withdrawal require a previous prolonged daily use of caffeine^[2]. Following 24 hours of a marked reduction in consumption, a minimum of 3 of these signs or symptoms is required to meet withdrawal criteria: difficulty concentrating, depressed mood/irritability, flu-like symptoms, headache, and fatigue^[2]. Additionally, the signs and symptoms must disrupt important areas of functioning and are not associated with effects of another condition^[2].

Rationale for Proposed Change

I would like to change the original sentence to my proposed sentences because the original sentence is less specific that my proposed sentences as they are a more precise interpretation of what constitutes withdrawal in the context of caffeine usage. The first sentence outlines a requirement, the second sentence details the signs and symptoms while the third sentence presents an additional requirement. I am referencing the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as it is the basis of psychiatric diagnoses in North America. Due to this, the DSM-5 is uniquely suited to provide accurate information regarding withdrawal from caffeine use in the context of dependence. I am deciding to move forward with this change because the original sentence lacks information regarding qualifying criteria for caffeine withdrawal. Because I am only expanding upon the original sentence I don't believe there is any controversy or varied opinion about these planned changes.

Critique of Source
I am choosing the DSM-5 as my source for the changes in the caffeine article since the DSM-5 meets Wikipedia’s MEDRS criteria (tertiary source; accumulation of various scientific resources; publication from a medical organization) and is less likely to be biased as a result. Its neutral approach to presenting information positively influenced my decision to use it as the source for my proposed changes to this article. Additionally there are no red flags present (as per the Practice Guidelines lecture) and the source is based on clinical judgment in addition to relevant scientific evidence.
