Metroisation

Metroisation is the process of converting a railway to a metro-style service. The term was coined by Transport for London in a white paper called "Strategic Case for Metroisation in south and south east London", published in 2019. According to TfL, it comprises six key improvements upon traditional rail travel:

  • Predictable services,
  • Better connections,
  • More capacity,
  • Shorter journey times,
  • A more reliable service,
  • Better customer service and experience.

These tenets have been used as model for other projects which seek to transform suburban rail provisions into rapid transit-style services, such as the Devon Metro and the Mid Cornwall Metro.

However, metroisation does not usually refer to the proposals of building new rapid transit systems from scratch, such as the Leeds metro, improvements, upgrades, or extensions to existing systems such as the Sydney Metro, or processes of developing large-scale integrated transport, such as in China.

Notability, in its Strategic Case, TfL differentiates between TUAG and metro frequencies in train timetables. Whereas it defines infrequent (meaning suburban) frequency of trains as having wait-times over 7.5 minutes on average, it defines TUAG frequency as between 5 and 7.5 minute wait times whilst metro frequency being sub-5 minute wait times.
