Hobbies

  • Woodworking - making stringed instruments. At present, making violins and viola. Hope to start a cello soon. Violins and violas are for grandchildren. Cello will be for me!
  • Cello - taking lessons since spring 2014
  • Stunt kites (1, 2 and 4 line) - always take a couple to JSM. Chicago (2016) was a blast!
  • New: Sewing (to make some kites)
  • Cycling (bicycle and motorcycle)
  • Microelectronics and computer numerical control (CNC).
    • Built my own large carving machine.
    • Use R to write the machine control code.
      • Mathematically model the shapes of the instruments (parabolic raised surfaces)
      • Carve backs and bellies of violins and violas
      • Programmed the machine's motors to "sing" in three-part harmony to "Summertime"
