Michael "Mike" Broadley FdSc, FIFireE is based in Liverpool, England. He began his firefighting career after completing basic training in 2003, which marked the start of over two decades of service across three fire and rescue organisations.

Military service Broadley started in the Royal Air Force Fire and Rescue Service, where he served for 12 years. During this period, he completed three operational deployments to Afghanistan (total 17 months) and a tour in the Falkland Islands.

Fire and Rescue Service career Greater Manchester and Merseyside After transitioning from the RAF, Broadley served five years with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service before joining Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, where he currently holds the rank of Station Manager B. His roles include responsibility for procurement, research & development, logistics and is the high volume pump lead.

Fire investigation and professional recognition. Broadley is a recognised fire investigator and was awarded the status of Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers (FIFireE), a professional grade reserved for individuals making significant contributions to fire engineering over at least 15 years.

Notable Investigations

Jackson Street Fatal Fire, Walkden (2017) Mike Broadley served as the Lead Fire Investigator for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service during the high-profile fatal house fire on Jackson Street, Walkden, in December 2017. The deliberate ignition of a residential property tragically resulted in multiple fatalities, including children. Mike led the scene examination, working closely with Greater Manchester Police and Crown Prosecution Service. His findings supported the successful conviction of those responsible. The investigation reinforced the importance of multi-agency collaboration and informed both national operational learning and fire investigation standards.

Christie Hospital Fire, Manchester (2017) In April 2017, Mike led the investigation into the large-scale fire at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, part of the Christie Hospital complex. The blaze, which broke out during roofing works, caused extensive damage to world-renowned cancer research facilities. Through detailed forensic analysis and liaison with contractors, structural engineers, and the Health and Safety Executive, Mike identified that the probable cause was hot debris from welding operations igniting combustible materials. His investigation led to improved hot work permit systems across NHS and high-risk construction sites.

Leadership and advocacy He serves as Vice‑Chair of the Merseyside Fire Service Armed Forces Network and actively supports armed forces personnel within the service. In November 2023, Broadley represented Merseyfire as part of the Civilian Services contingent at the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London. He has served as a director for the Uk Association of Fire Investigators (UKAFI).
