Memorial Grove, Civic Park Newcastle
Memorial Grove is a war memorial that is dedicated to the citizens of Newcastle, New South Wales who were killed in both World War I and World War II. It is situated in the south east corner of Civic Park, ajoining Darby St and Laman St, Newcastle. It is surrounded by other noteable buildings which include the Newcastle Art Gallery, Regional Library and City Hall.[1]
History
It was opened on Sunday 12th November 1961 and was dedicated by the Bishop of Newcastle, The Right Reverend A.G. Housden B.A. A bronze plaque fixed to the stone wall on the left hand side of the steps leading to the grove was unveiled by Mrs P. C. Wyatt, President of the Newcastle Groups of the Garden Club of Australia.[2] This memorial currently has a preservation Working Group comprising of veterans organisations and community members that have the aim of preserving and restoring the Grove in Civic Park.[3]
Plaques and Memorials
The park features some significant memorials including: The central sculpture is an Eagle. This represents the the RAAF, and was created by Mr Don McHattie, of Bar Beach. Ashes of servicemen who has passed away have been spread around the site. Other features include The Anchor, Vietnam Plinth and a plaque representing the Rats of Tobruk.[4] There is a flagpole which was originally donated by the Western Suburb Leagues Club. It is however now in need of renovation to meet current safety standards.
