<ref>There were about 20 kids and one teacher, Mrs. Wagner, in one room. The teacher brought water in a milk can and we all had our own tin cups. There was a boy and a girl outhouse and I could hardly wait to be in the eighth grade as those big kids had the desired job of putting lime in the outhouse. We little kids could only beat the erasers. We all had recess at the same time. The big kids and little kids played together. The little school had no janitor, so the daily jobs were handled by the teacher, and the kids and parents that may be called to do a special chore. I walked to school. One family had a horse and drove a buggy to school. This is NOT common while I was growing up. No one would consider vandalizing the school or grounds, because we all took pride in it. In the spring the parents would all come to plant and to weed. The “rich” man, Mr. Ray, in the area who owned a cannery in Hillsboro (Later known as “Fla-vor-Fresh”) and the race track between my house and the school (Hawthorn Downs, today the Intel Campus) always donated ice cream to our year-end picnic. The first and second grades got to leave school earlier in the day than the big kids. 2<ref>
