On February 1, 2007, John L. Mason took office as Film Commissioner for Hawaii County within the Department of Research and Development.

John has been a resident of Hawaii Island for 3 years now and previously owned a property on Maui from 2001 to 2005. After a 20 plus year career as an executive in the Entertainment Imaging Division with the Eastman Kodak Company in Los Angeles, John enjoyed tours of duty in Rochester, New York and in Hollywood serving in many capacities, including sales and marketing, training, and management.

John is a past President of The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers(SMPTE), the leading worldwide society that establishes standards and industry practices in the motion imaging fields. He has been an officer of several professional organizations, including The University Film and Video Association, The International Documentary Association, and The Inter-Society for Enhancement of Cinema Presentation. In addition, John was an Associate Member of The American Society of Cinematographers for many years.

John holds his Ph.D from Ohio State University.
