Elliot Michael Zimmerman (born July 11, 1953) is an American entertainment lawyer and musician. He founded The Florida Bar Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section (EASL)[1][2][3] and practices as a board-certified intellectual property attorney[4][5][6] while maintaining a parallel career as a musician and record producer.[7]

Early life and education

Zimmerman was born on July 11, 1953, in Long Island, New York.[citation needed] He graduated cum laude from Bernard M. Baruch College in 1976 with a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.).[citation needed] In 1979, he earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law as a member of its inaugural class.[citation needed]

Career

Florida Bar contributions

After being admitted to The Florida Bar in 1981, Zimmerman established The Florida Bar Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Law Committee (EASL) in 1982, which became a section in 1988.[1] As committee chair, Zimmerman successfully petitioned the Board of Designation, Certification, and Advertising to create a specialist designation for entertainment law practitioners in 1984.[8] He maintained this designation until the program ended in 1996.[9] In 2007, Zimmerman became certified in Intellectual Property Law when the certification was launched.[4] Additionally, Zimmerman served as EASL's webmaster and created its listserv.[10]

Notable cases

He has written about copyright and intellectual property law, including the impact of artificial intelligence on digital media distribution.[18][19]

Music career

Zimmerman began performing professionally at age 16 as a multi-instrumentalist in New York.[citation needed] His musical collaborations include work with artists such as Jaco Pastorius, Ahmad Jamal, Duffy Jackson, Lee Musiker, The Ink Spots, and the A Few Jews Blues Band.[20][21][22]

During the 1980s, Zimmerman performed at Fort Lauderdale's Musicians Exchange Cafe, a venue that hosted local and national acts.[23][24] In 2007, following the death of venue owner Donald Cohen, Zimmerman acquired ownership of the Musicians Exchange brand and transformed it into a digital media platform for artists.[25][26]

Zimmerman's production credits include his original song "My Favorite Holiday" performed by The Ink Spots (1982) with Duffy Jackson on drums,[27][28][29] and collaborations with British soul producer Ian Levine. Zimmerman is featured on two tracks of Levine's compilation Northern Soul 2024 (Wienerworld, WNRCD5127, 2024), the first release in the "Northern Soul" series since 2012.[30][7][31]

In 2026, Zimmerman began releasing original material as a singer-songwriter, issuing a series of singles on streaming and video services including Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube; releases from that year include "Energy", "Alien Seduction", "Cyber Me Baby", "Chasing a Ghost" and "Danger Zone".[32] Some of this output is jazz- and blues-influenced scat material released under the performing name "Z-Pop Scat Daddy", including the video "Z-Pop Scat Daddy Blues".[33] Zimmerman produces accompanying music videos using generative artificial intelligence and publishes them on his YouTube channel, @JammerPro.[34] He has also made guest appearances, including live musical performances, on The Brooklyn Cafe Show, a South Florida internet talk show.[35][36]

Recognition

The Florida Bar Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section named Zimmerman Chair Emeritus in 2009, acknowledging his contributions to entertainment law in Florida, his advancement of specialization standards in legal practice, and his work facilitating public access to designated specialists in the fields of entertainment, arts, and sports law.[2]
