Leo Magnets,[1] artist [2] / composer[3] / musician[4], has succumbed to mythical and enigmatic comparisons simply due to the lack of documented information about his life and work. While today he is considered analogous with the fundamental art and beauty of music making, his peculiar existence stemmed from quite meagre beginnings.

Born in 1956 in outback Australia to aristocrat Johannes Magnets, a young Leopold Gottlieb Magnets was primed within his large prestigious family for a life of servitude and ultimately, soldier-hood. However during adolescence, Magnets fled from these confines and extensively travelled the world. These explorations and discovery of the physical world became the foundations for Magnets' passion and ability to generate raw, human-emotional response through music.

Upon returning to Australia in 1973, Magnets signed a publishing contract with Alberts Music of Sydney[5] (home of a large number of monumental Australian acts, including The Easybeats [6] and ACDC [7]), and for 10 years (1974-84) he wrote scores and soundtracks as a staff writer. Among the work he made during this period includes the unforgettable "Rain Horse Head" as featured in the film Mad Max II.

In 1987 Magnets briefly became a household name when his song "The Bounty" unexpectedly broke onto the mainstream charts. Since then he has been known to collaborate and ghost-write for many artists, including Nick Cave, Beck, David Bowie and Yoko Ono. However, his reluctance to take any interviews or perform any live shows throughout the course of his career maintained his so-desired status as sub-cultural and socially elite. It has also been predicted that up to 90% of Magnets-spawned compositions and songs are not credited to him, for a range of reasons.

Leo Magnets' name was tarnished in the mid 90's when unfounded allegations emerged claiming he had illegitimate dealings with singer / songwriter / producer Wiley Rennick[8]. The confrontation and limelight reportedly caused Leo Magnets to bitterly recline into further hermitage. (It is rumoured that he since destroyed a large number of unpublished compositions.)
