Gem O'Reilly
Gem O'Reilly (Gemma O'Reilly born 1994) is a British journalist of Irish decent. She is a BBC reporter and professional musician.
Early life
Gem has been writing original music from being a teenager. As a teen, she would post her songs on YouTube, where she was discovered by Glee's Damian McGinty and signed to an Irish record label called 'Walled City Records'. Her first album 'Teenager' made it to number seven in the country charts, alongside Taylor Swift and Johnny Cash.
At the age of 16, O'Reilly was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart condition, Long QT Syndrome, and spinal condition, scoliosis. At that point she was studying her A-Levels. O'Reilly studied broadcast journalism at the University of Salford.
Career
After getting a first class degree and an NCTJ in broadcast journalism, O'Reilly was selected for the BBC's disability talent scheme, Extend in 2017.
Since then O'Reilly has worked as a journalist for BBC News, BBC World Service, BBC Breakfast and now as an on-air reporter for BBC London. Gem's journalism specialises in health and disability, where she has produced and reported her own disability series and covered the dangers of underlying heart conditions like her own.
O'Reilly was shortlisted as Journalist of the Year 2024 for the Scope Awards for her work on disability and invited to the House of Lords for her coverage of those struggling during the cost of living because of their disabilities.
In 2023, O'Reilly's colleague and BBC correspondent Sean Dilley nominated Gem for Forbes 30 Under 30 for her work on underserved audiences and she was shortlisted as a European candidate for her journalism.
O'Reilly is now a reporter for BBC London and works as a breakfast on-air journalist on Aaron Paul's morning radio programme. She is also a board member of the BBC's disability network, BBC Ability.
Music
In 2012, O'Reilly was dubbed 'The British Taylor Swift' by BBC Radio after her album made it to the top UK country charts and she was signed by Damian McGinty.
In 2014, O'Reilly released her first music video, filmed in Manchester. Then in 2014 O'Reilly's second album, I Have Found Me, was released with Judd Lander as her management. In 2019, she released her third album Love Potion.
In 2024, O'Reilly who combines her duties as a BBC reporter and her music career, released her fourth album, Fire. This album was recognised by various music critics as "a deeply personal journey through resilience, love, and self-discovery."
Personal life
O'Reilly is engaged to be married and lives in the South East with her partner who is a surgeon.
