ISO/IEC 39075 (GQL)
ISO/IEC 39075 Information technology — Database languages — GQL is an international standard for a graph query language. Published in 2024, it is the first new ISO database language standard since the introduction of SQL in 1987.
Overview
GQL is a declarative language designed for querying and managing property graphs. While SQL was designed for the Relational model, GQL focuses on the relationships between data points as first-class citizens.
Key Features
- Pattern Matching: Uses a visual syntax (similar to Cypher) to describe paths between nodes.
- Quantified Path Patterns (QPP): Allows for searching complex, variable-length paths.
- Schema Support: Supports both fixed schemas and flexible, schema-less data models.
Comparison with SQL/PGQ
| Feature | GQL (ISO/IEC 39075) | SQL/PGQ (Part of ISO/IEC 9075) |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Standalone graph language | SQL extension |
| Operations | Full CRUD capabilities | Primarily Read-only |
| Data Model | Native Property Graphs | Relational tables viewed as graphs |
