Collate Baptist District Association

The Collate Missionary Baptist Association was organized in 1886. It served an area in the northeastern part of Indian Territory in the Cherokee Nation. It is not to be confused with the Cherokee Indian Baptist Association. It may be one and the same and probably is - as the present Collate District Association of the Oklahoma Baptist State Convention ( which is affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A. Inc.) This association is known to have fellowshipped Black, Indian and White Baptists in its area. It sponsored both a Women's Missionary Society and a Sunday school Convention. It also supported a Black preacher, Rev. J.R. White, as a missionary to Blacks in the Cherokee Nation. In 1990 the Collate District Association was reported to consist of 31 churches. The Collate Baptist District Association was among the first Black Associations to have a Sunday School Convention. In 1899 the Collate Sunday School Convention reported and gave $ 25.00 to the work of the Territorial Baptist Convention. In fact, records indicate the Collate Sunday School Convention may have been the first Black Baptist Association to have a Sunday School Convention
