Beach Palooza is a "gnarly running event held on sandy shores where Paloozers get their feet wet while tackling a series of radical obstacles. As the sun sets, the stoked crowd lets loose with beer and beach tunes.”[1] Hosted by Red Frog Events, Beach Palooza is an adventure 5k that pits runners against obstacles throughout its 3 mile beach course.[2]

Founding

Beach Palooza was launched on November 13, 2010 in Daytona Beach[3] , Florida by Red Frog Events, who also puts on Great Urban Race and Warrior Dash.[4] This first race in the series had hundreds of runners and even more participants.[3] With this success, Red Frog Events hosted five more races throughout the United States.[1]

Race Details

Beach Palooza is a 5K obstacle course and festival hosted on a beach. Each participant is given a race bib, timing chip and pineapple hat. Beach Palooza merchandise is available for purchase online.[5]

Each race has between 9 to 12 obstacles that vary depending on the course. Waves occur each half hour and wave capacity varies depending on the location. Costumes are encouraged and although there are no recognized teams many group costumes are found and participants choose to run as an informal team.[5]

After Race Festivities

A post-race festival for runners and spectators occurs at each race. The party includes music, games, food and drink. It is free to spectators, and includes spectator viewing areas often located near the final obstacles. A large bonfire is built on the sand towards the end of the race (venue permitting) and various beach games such as cornhole and ladder golf are available to play.[6]

The food tent offers several tasty options. The beer tent generally offers one or two selections of beer, as well as Mike’s Harder Lemonade, an official sponsor of Beach Palooza.[7]

Awards

Every Beach Palooza concludes with an awards ceremony that recognizes[8] :

  • Top three male and female overall receive customized Beach Palooza skim boards
  • Top three male and female runners in each age group receive engraved conch shells
  • Best costume award varies, often a gift basket with beach items
