Frost was born in Ferntree Gulley, an Eastern suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Her parents divorced in 1992 when she was 3 years old. Frost studied Community Welfare at the Swinburne University of Technology.
Before appearing on The Bachelor, Frost was a financial consultant for the BMW group. Her various accolades in Australian television and radio has led to numerous awards and nominations including a Graham Kennedy Award nomination at the TV Logie Awards in 2018.
Career
2014: The Bachelor Australia, Season 2
Season 2 of The Bachelor Australia aired on television in July 2014. Frost competed on the show along with 29 other women to win the heart of Blake Garvey, a then 31-year old real estate agent from Perth[1]. In the final episode of the show, Garvey was to choose between Frost and her competitor Louise Pillidge[1]. Garvey chose Frost and went as far as to propose to Samantha on national television during the season finale[1]. A proposal in the season finale is highly unusual on the Australian format of The Bachelor which subsequently sparked a lot of interest around the couple[2]. The excitement was short lived as it was announced in an official statement from Network 10 the following day that the engagement between the two had been called off[3]. It was later revealed that Garvey had left Frost for Louise Pillidge, the runner up on the show[3]. It was this famous dumping that lead to the beginning of Frost’s popularity as she became known as ‘Australia’s sweetheart’ and continued her search for love on The Bachelorette Australia in 2015.
2015: The Bachelorette Australia, Season 1
Frost’s season of The Bachelorette ran across 5 weeks and far surpassed the television ratings of the first two seasons of The Bachelor Australia[4]. In her quest for love, Frost chose Sasha Mielczarek – a then 30-year old construction manager from rural New South Wales - as her final contestant in the shows season finale[4]. An article published by Network 10 stated “from the first rose to the last, the chemistry between the pair was undeniable” as the pair shared numerous single dates and intimate moments throughout the show[5]. Following the shows conclusion, Frost and Mielczarek maintained a long-distance relationship and continued their romance for an additional 18 months until a public statement released by Frost’s management team announced the news of their split[6].
November 2015-2017: Breakfast Radio, Rove and Sam
Following Frost’s season of The Bachelorette Australia she joined the 2Day FM radio station as a breakfast radio co-host[7]. Frost co-hosted the Rove and Sam national prime time breakfast radio show with co-host and comedian/media personality, Rove McManus[7]. The show ran for a duration of 18-months. In January 2017, Southern Cross Austereo announced the Rove and Sam show would be downgraded from its prime position to an evening show due to poor ratings[7]. The breakfast radio show featuring Frost, struggled to increase audience engagement as they achieved an audience share of only 3%[8]. The pair managed a 0.8 percent increase in listeners market share. Shortly after the show’s demotion, 2Day FM axed the team altogether and the Rove and Sam show was replaced with Em Rusciano[7].
2017: Hells Kitchen Australia
Frost then went on to join the cast of Hell’s Kitchen on Channel 7 as a contestant alongside the likes of Jess Fox, famous Australian slalom canoeist Olympic champion[9]. The show aired throughout August and September with Frost lasting up until the final week where she was eliminated by Marco Pierre White the show’s host[9]. Her reason for elimination encompassed the fact that she left the meat station unattended allowing a batch of lamb rumps to overcook[9].
December 2017 - December 2021: Home and Away
Sam Frost made her debut on the Australian soap opera Home and Away during the season finale episode which was aired on the 18th of December, 2017[10]. The show which first screened in 1987 is ranked within the top 10 most watched Australian local television shows[11]. She was introduced to the show playing the role of Jasmine Delaney, described by channel 7 as a spirited Aussie girl with a big heart and a dark past. When Frost auditioned for the role she had no prior acting experience which lead to some criticism due to the fact that trained professionals were snubbed of the role however Frost’s title was defended by other Home and Away actors and crew[12]. Julie McGauran, Seven Network head of drama also stood up for Frost’s casting in the role. Frost’s portrayal of Jasmine coincidently led to a TV Logie Award nomination for ‘Most Popular New Talent’ in 2018[12][10].
Frost’s role on the Australian soap opera spanned across 5 years until the COVID19 pandemic caused the need for a vaccine targeting the infectious virus [13]. Members of the public were advised to be double vaccinated to prevent the spread and protect against infection[13]. Following such events, Frost released a short one-minute video to her Instagram story in October 2021 stating her decision to not be vaccinated against COVID19[14]. In the video she stated “there are many reasons why people aren’t getting vaccinated…there's a few reasons why I’m not… I've spoken to my doctor and my psychologist about it and I’m going to keep that private”[15]. Her vocal expression to remain unvaccinated caused controversy amongst fans and media. Consequently, Frost deactivated her Instagram account for a short two-week period before reactivating it[16].
Shortly after her story post, Channel 7 made COVID vaccinations mandatory for all staff in an announcement stating all employees would need to be double vaccinated by the 10th of January. A representative for the network told the Herald Sun “Seven productions have made the decision to only engage those who are fully vaccinated against COVID19”[16].
Days after this statement from the network was released, Frost announced a new statement on her Instagram account, disregarding her previous decision on the COVID19 vaccinations[15]. She proclaimed she would be getting vaccinated in February 2022 following a medical procedure[15]. Channel 7 planned to temporarily write her character out of the show and allow for her to return to filming in 2022 once she was fully vaccinated[17].
Despite her compliance to be fully vaccinated, Frost made the decision to permanently leave the show in December[18]. Channel 7 confirmed her decision to quit Home and Away stating “We support and respect Sam’s decision to leave”[18]. Frost’s retirement from the show was unrelated to the channels vaccination policy. “Sam leaves with our sincere thanks and very best wishes for the future” states a Channel 7 spokesperson[18].
2018: Believe by Sam Frost
Frost’s mother Debbie had a long battle with mental health and eating disorders whilst struggling to raise six children as a single parent[19]. When Debbie’s partner Paul passed of a stroke her mental health deteriorated and Frost called up Beyond Blue to ask for help[20]. Frost has since hosted fundraiser events and has donated to the Beyond Blue Foundation[20]. In 2018, Frost decided to begin her own foundation for mental health called Believe[21]. Believe is cofounded by Frost and her sister Kristine, and focuses on helping young girls who are struggling with mental health issues[21]. Frost having opened up about her own struggles with mental health particularly anxiety and depression, wanted to provide other young women like herself with the necessary tools to cope and deal with such difficult times. “For me, depression has been something that I’ve battled my whole life” stated Frost in an interview with Who Magazine[22]. The Believe website offers advice on a number of mental health related topics such as social media, anxiety, and body image[21]. In addition to Believe by Sam Frost, Frost and her sister also launched a project titled Stronger by Believe in which they promote body image and self-confidence whilst hosting workshops with teenage girls[21].
October 2018: Everest Race Day Ambassador
Frost was announced as the ambassador for Everest Race Day in its second year of running[23]. The race which debuted on Australian turf in 2017 is run on the second Saturday of October and is the richest turf race in the world with prize money of $15 million dollars. Whilst Frost was attending the race event, a gelding from Grafton won The Everest and took home $6 million dollars of prize money[24]. The day was one of the largest the Australian Turf Club has seen reaching its capacity of 40,000 guests[25]. The gates of the Australian Turf Club had to be shut after midday due to the massive attendance[25].
2020: The All New Monty: Guys and Gals
The All New Monty is a charitable TV show in which popular celebrities and media personalities strip down and ‘dare to bare’ in order to raise money for various causes. The show was promoted as a three-part Channel 7 special hosted by Shane Jacobsen and Georgie Parker[26]. In the 2020 The All New Monty: Guys and Gals, Frost stripped down to raise money and awareness for women’s cancer[27]. She was joined by 14 other celebrities including Daniel Spencer, Samuel Johnson, and Orpheus Pledger[26].
Awards and Nominations
Frost has been nominated for various awards throughout her television and acting career. In 2018 Frost was nominated for a TV Week Logie Award, namely, the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent for her role as Jasmine Delaney on Home and Away[28]. She was nominated for the award alongside the likes of Matty J, fellow Bachelor contestant, who was put up for the award based on his role on Channel Ten’s The Living Room[28]. In 2020 Frost was an Audience Choice Award nominee at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) awards[29]. She was nominated for Favourite TV Contestant of the Decade for her appearance on The Bachelor 2014 and The Bachelorette 2015[29].
