Esther Okjoo Shin

This is a Korean name; the family name is Shin, and the English name is Esther.

Okjoo shin (Hangul: 신옥주; RR: Shin Ok(-)joo; IPA: [ɕin okdʑu]; born June 16, 1958) is a Korean pastor. She is the founder and senior pastor of Grace Road Church.

Biography

Esther Shin, the current pastor of Grace Road Church, became Christian shortly after her marriage at 23 years of age. She founded and served as senior pastor at Philadelphia Church in Pyeongchon, South Korea for seven years before spending three years in Beijing, China, as a missionary. She described the reason for her resignation from pastoral position in Philadelphia Church and her departure to China by stating, "In the seven years as the church grew, there was no change in the people, and I felt like God would hold me accountable for their blood price."

In 2008, Shin returned to Korea, founded Open Bible Research Institute (Korean: 열린성경연구원), and held the first public seminar at Korean Church Centennial Memorial Building on June 16, 2008. Since her return, she had been speaking at seminars[2] held by Paul Academy[3][4] (formerly Open Bible Research Institute, later renamed to Korean Christian Spiritual Military Training Centre[5] in 2011, and again to Grace Road Mission in 2013), and she has founded Grace Road Church, which relocated to Dongbaekdong, Yongin in 2011, and again to the current location Gwacheon in 2013.

Biblical perspective

Shin stresses the importance of seeing the Bible in the proper way through her message and through her books. She states that the Bible is the 'Word of the living God' unlike any other book in the world, and she warns that if interpreted rashly in human thinking, one would not be preaching the gospel but opposing the Lord instead. Her emphasis can be seen in naming the title of her first book "For My Thoughts are not Your Thoughts," quoted from Isaiah 55:8, highlighting that one must discern biblically the 'thoughts of men and the thoughts of God', and open up the spiritual perspective. She states that the whole Bible must be seen as the 'work of Jesus Christ'. In theological terms, it is called the ministry of the redemption in Jesus Christ.

Tongues

Shin states that the "LALALA TATATA" gift of tongue is a private interpretation and a sign given to the unbelievers (1Co 14:22). She states that the biblical tongue is reading the Scripture literally and viewing it physically, and that one must interpret the tongue (discern the spiritual things with spiritual and prove clearly and logically so that the others can understand the words easily) for the listeners to understand and come to believe the written Word of God.

Charismata(Gifts)

As Shin quotes "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing," (John 6:63) she states that the supposed "miracles of the Spirit" of miraculously healing diseases, turning copper fillings into gold fillings, people falling over backwards, and breaking out into unintelligible "LALALA TATATA" all pertain to the flesh, and that they have nothing to do with the soul.
