Problem

How is the growth rate and health of a bean plant affected by the pH of the soil?

Hypothesis

The bean plant will grow best when watered with the pH 7 (tap water) solution as acidic soil will drown the nutrients and basic soil will make it difficult for the plants to take in minerals.

Materials

  1. 8 bean seedlings
  2. Potting soil
  3. Water
  4. Vinegar
  5. Baking soda

Equipment

  1. Measuring cup
  2. Ruler
  3. 4 Styrofoam cups
  4. 4 plastic water bottles
  5. Tablespoon
  6. Marker

Procedure

  1. Keep plant in open sunlight.
  2. Water plant with tap water everyday at 4.30 p.m. until it grows up to 4 cm.
  3. Take observations everyday before watering it.
  4. Then, water plant with its specified pH solution everyday at 4.30 p.m.
  5. Take a picture of the plant everyday after watering it.
  6. Repeat steps 1 & 2 for every seedling until the plant grows up to 4 cm.
  7. Repeat steps 1, 3-5 for every plant everyday.

Variables

Independent variable:

    • Soil pH; whether it is acidic, basic or neutral.
    • Atmosphere; cold, warm, hot, etc. All the plants face the same conditions and the experimenter can change them.

Dependant variable:

    • Height of plant; the growth rate of the plant is affected by the pH of the soil.

Control variables:

    • Amount of sunlight
    • Amount of water/solution given to the plant
    • Type of seed
    • Type of soil
    • Location of plant
