Article Evaluation

The Lilo & Stich article is well-written, though distracting information could be found within it. It's unbiased, but I found a glaring formatting error: a quote is not in quotations, and it wasn't cited. A lot of the article isn't cited, actually.

A lot happened on the Talk page: there were serious copyright issues during the writing and editing of the article, and whole sections were deleted without prior knowledge or consent. All in all, this would be a good article to work on.

Choosing an Article

  • Discord: Can add a section about various fandoms who utilize the platform for communication, fests, etc. So far, the article is very one-sided, talking about how the platform is a hub for alt-right groups. Which is true, but Queer and fan communities use it as well.
  • Remix Culture: Can add online fanfiction and fanfiction anthologies and zines to remix culture, talk about the OTW's work in defending remix culture.
  • Fanfiction: A lot of the terminology is old; can update it, talk about pull-to-publish, add in citations... a lot are missing.
  • *Wattpad[1]: Update publishing section, add a section about the response to Wattpad and its publishing endeavors.*

Drafting Wattpad Publishing Section

What currently exists: "In January 2019, Wattpad launched Wattpad Books, a new publishing division. At least six Wattpad Books titles are planned for 2019."[1]

  • Edit format for clarity: move around paragraphs to make more chronological sense.
  • Under Statistics: As of January 2019, nearly one thousand titles have been published or adapted for the screen.[2]

Publishing Section: add a new sub-heading for Wattpad Books

On January 24, 2019, Wattpad launched publishing division Wattpad Books led by Wattpad Studios' Publishing Deputy Manager Ashleigh Gardner, with operations managed by Wattpad Studios' Publishing Director Deanna McFadden.[2] According to CEO Allen Lau, this project was in an effort to take the "guesswork" out of publishing.[3]

Wattpad Books acquisitions uses a mix of their Story DNA Machine Learning technology (algorithms) learning with human editors.[4] This human-and-digital acquisitions team look to Wattpad's large and existing digital library (over half a billion titles) in order to select notable material for publication.[4][5] According to Wattpad Books leader Ashleigh Gardner, this is in an effort to combat bias inherent in human editors.[4] Gardner says that this technology analyzes the data behind each title, looking at story structure and word use in addition to levels of reader engagement per title.[5] This data is then compared to analyses of other books on Wattpad and in the public domain.[5] Once all the data has been collected and engagement has been looked at, human staffers read the titles and create their list.[5] This being said, Forbes contributor Mason Sands cites books-turned-films The Kissing Booth and After as examples of Wattpad's acquisitions AI already failing on the diversity front; both novels are criticized for their use of traditional YA romance tropes, specifically that of the smart white female character falling for the equally white bad boy.[6] Mason says that both these stories were wildly popular on Wattpad, but bring nothing new or diverse to the YA genre.[6]

All published titles are an amalgamation of international hits and notable but known material from their digital library.[2] These titles are distributed by Macmillan in the United States of America, and Raincoast Books in Canada, with their Fall 2019 list available in leading North American retailers.[2] Outside North America, Gardner has sold the rights to Hachette (France) for Deanna Cameron’s What Happened Last Night.[7] Additionally, Lauren Palphreyman's rights to Cupid's Match have been sold in French (Hachette) and German (S. Fischer Verlgage).[8]

Wattpad's first list consists of six young adult novels.[8] The QB Bad Boy & Me by Tay Marley (26.3 million reads), will be their lead title and is slated for release on August 20, 2019.[8] The remaining five books will be released between September and October 2019 and include: Trapeze by Leigh Ansell (2.5 million reads), What Happened That Night by Deanna Cameron (over 1 million reads), Saving Everest by Sky Reads (17.2 million reads), Cupid's Match by Lauren Palphreyman (46.4 million reads), and I'm a Gay Wizard by V.S. Santoni (404,000 reads).[8] Wattpad hopes to publish 18 titles in their 2020 list.[8]
