Tung Pok Chin was a Chinese American author.[1] He immigrated to the United States in 1934 as a paper son to circumvent the Chinese Exclusion Acts. In his youth, he worked in laundries in Boston, Rhode Island, and Brooklyn, New York. His spare time consisted of studying English, reading Chinese literature, and writing poetry. Through this, he was able to start correspondence with Dr. Ralph E. Pickett, the then Associate Dean of New York University's School of Education; though he wasn't eligible for admission at NYU, the two shared literature and Chin's self-education was strongly supported.

Tung Pok Chin was the first Chinese person in New York City to enlist in the U.S. Navy, which occurred the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. [2]Following his discharge, he wrote literature for the China Daily News, a newspaper which was sympathetic to the Chinese revolution. However, due to several FBI accusations of communism in the 1950s, Tung Pok Chin, for fear of his immigration status, burned much of his work. [3]
