Mohsen Nafar.‬ (Persian:محسن نفر) is an Iranian composer,[1] radif-preserver, researcher, teacher, and tar and setar instrumentalist and improviser, described by All music as a leading Iranian classical composer and musician.[2]Mohsen Nafar was born in 1960 in Tehran At age of twelve he attended secondary school at a music conservatory[3] until 1977 at his second year in music conservatory with recommendation of his teacher Reza Vohdani he was introduced to Ali Akbar Shahnazi, his music studies continued for five years with Shahnazi , his passion encourage him to take lesson from Shahnazi six days a week not only in day and evening classes of music conservatory but also in Maktab-e-Saba, In 1975 advised by Mahmoud_Karimi and received an invitation from Darius Safvat to enter at "Center for preservation and propagation of Persian music" as a teacher of Tar and Setar , also he had an opportunity to receive lessons from Saeed Hormozi, Abdollah Davami and Yousef Foroutan as they were teaching in Center on that time , He began postgraduate studies at the Tehran University of Art. After the Iranian Revolution, he resumed his studies in philosophy. Nafar plays the tar and setar. Over the years Nafar’s teachers have included Reza Vohdani , Ali Akbar Shahnazi, Mahmoud Karimi, Abdollah Davami, Yusef Forutan, and Sa'id Hormozi.

Nafar received an honorary doctorate in music from ministry of science and technology. Nafar currently teaching music in Tehran university of Arts and Nafar has great knowledge of Radif, In terms of performance techniques he has his own unique techniques and introducing a very high level of proficiency,which can be categorized in same class of Mirza Hossein-Qoli, Ali Akbar Shahnazi and Ali Naqi Vaziri ,among those who improved advanced techniques of Tar improvisation and methods up to now and having deep effect on Tar improvisation.
