Scope: This is a work in progress, and I intend to take it right up to the present day. It would be appreciated if other contributors could give me a couple of weeks to finish it off before we start arguing about the legitimacy of some of the people included in my list. I also need to verify the dates of several pre-14th-century patriarchs by checking with Michael the Syrian and Bar Hebraeus. Many of the dates in the existing list of Syriac Orthodox patriarchs are out by one or two years, and I am basing my dates on those given by the respected French scholar J. M. Fiey in his 1993 book Oriens Christianus, the most recent statement of the case.
Nomenclature: I know there are many different ways of spelling the names of the patriarchs, but the spellings I am using are those most commonly used in English, and therefore most familiar to the casual reader. It would be nice if other contributors could use them too. If I live long enough, I will get round to standardising nomenclature throughout the various articles on the Syriac Orthodox Church and its patriarchs.

I read that a third line centered in Melitene was founded after the death of Philoxenus Nemrud. If I'm not mistaken Nemrud himself had his seat at Melitene. Does someone have a list of those patriarchs?--Kathovotalk22:32, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2014-03-07T22:32:00.000Z","author":"Kathovo","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Kathovo-2014-03-07T22:32:00.000Z-Melitene_line?","replies":["c-Mugsalot-2014-04-30T20:12:00.000Z-Kathovo-2014-03-07T22:32:00.000Z"]}}-->
On http://www.syriacstudies.com/AFSS/Syriac_Scholars_and_Writers/Entries/2008/4/10_243._Patriarch_Michael_II_%28d._1312%29.html there's a reference to a Constantine of Melitene in 1295 which could be our man. This could be referring to an Ignatius Constantine we have under the Sis patriarchs whose reign begins just as Michael II's does which could indicate a split. Ignatius Philoxenus could also be a continuation of this split. However this is all speculation so it's anyone's guess really. If I'm not mistaken David Wilmshurst is currently preparing to publish a book about the Syriac Orthodox Church. His should know more about this subject.--Kathovotalk20:24, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2014-04-30T20:24:00.000Z","author":"Kathovo","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Kathovo-2014-04-30T20:24:00.000Z-Mugsalot-2014-04-30T20:12:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
