Nudes and prudes
Probably worth mentioning is that (at the insistence of Jane Sather?) the eight bas-relief nudes were either removed early in the Gate's history, or never installed in the first place, and blanks stood in for them until the 1970s, when they turned up in storage (IIRC, under the bleachers in Cal Stadium). Obviously, my memory of the details is not very clear, but that memory derives from reading about this in the Daily Californian at the time, so if a digitally searchable archive of the Daily Cal from circa 1975-78 is available (I have not been able to access one via the www), more definite info should be fairly easy to extract and cite. 66.81.244.249 (talk) 12:23, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Circle at Sather Gate is not an old streetcar turnaround
The claim is made without substantiation. Yes, Telegraph used to extend as far as Sather Gate. Yes, an early horsecar (later steam dummy) track reached that locale BEFORE Sather Gate was constructed. But by the time the gate was built, the newer Key System Telegraph Avenue streetcar line was already turning down Bancroft before reaching it. Photos of the construction of Sather Gate do not show any tracks or a "turnaround" in front of it. Another photo from about the same time that appears on p.186 of Vern Sappers' definitive "Key System Streetcars" shows a streetcar turning down Bancroft from Telegraph. Unless this statement can be backed by some other evidence, the claim that the circular design in the concrete has anything to do with a streetcar turnaround should be removed.
