Talk:Path integration

I broke Path integration out from Dead reckoning, as the latter is purely a mathematical analysis of measured events, while Path integration is purely a biological process. - Mugs

Frame of Reference

The usual problem with these kind of descriptions is that sometimes some terms are not properly defined. I take the sentences

...is information from the vestibular organs, which detect movement in the three dimensions.

Together, these sources of information can tell the animal which direction it is moving, at what speed, and for how long.

  • Probably the word movement, should be accelerations, since inertial sensors can only measure accelerations, that is changes in the state of motion, not the state of motion itself.
  • direction, speed, how long are relative terms. Accepting that direction may be easy to measure and that internal biological clocks can provide a good estimation of how long. The term speed remains undefined. Is it velocity respect to what? The word speed makes not sense unless a reference is given.
